Danny Stenberg, Feb. 10, 1964 — Apr. 15, 2017

As I wrote about here, my brother, Danny Stenberg, died in a motorcycle accident less than a year ago. Today would have been his 54th birthday and he would have been sober for well over a decade. He also still would have been finishing his masters degree in social work from Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), having dug himself out from high school drop out to drug abuser to someone who spent his days studying to help others.

But don’t take my word for it. Instead listen to all his classmates and professors at IUSB who speak through misty eyes about his indefatigable optimism and generosity with his time. At the memorial, hearing these testimonials from his classmates we’d never met was both pleasantly surprising and validating. We knew we loved Danny’s spirit, but we didn’t know so many others experienced it the same way.

These testimonials culminated when I found a note in my mailbox from Dr. Carol Masset, Professor and Director of Social Work at IUSB. She had been talking to my mom about a scholarship at IUSB in Danny’s name. They had already raised $6,000 from Danny’s classmates by the time I heard about the scholarship. If they raise $25,000 it will become a permanent, endowed scholarship.

Please read or re-read my brief remembrance of Danny. If you’re moved by his spirit the way others have been, please donate a little something to the fund. It’s easy:
